Thousands of Xi Jinping’s soldiers will head to the ally country to participate in a joint military exercise, according to reports. They will be joined by many from a number of other nations, some of which have caused concerns for Western countries.

The Kremlin last month announced plans to hold “Vostok” (East) exercises despite the ongoing war in Ukraine.

It did not then specify the countries which would be involved.

Reports indicate that alongside China, Belarus, Mongolia, Tajikistan and others will be present.

Among these others are India, which has frustrated numerous Western politicians and commentators.

David Henig, UK Director of the European Centre For International Political Economy, said this demonstrated that “India does not believe it in their interest to choose sides in today’s geopolitics”.

Alicia Kearns, Tory MP for Rutland and Melton, added: “[The] bigger question is why India is participating in military exercises with Russia.

“Whilst many nations won’t limit engagements with China, military cooperation with Russia now undermines international norms and values.”

Announcing its involvement, China stressed that the military exercise was “unrelated to the current international and regional situation”.

Beijing’s Defence Ministry said in a statement: “The aim is to deepen practical and friendly cooperation with the armies of participating countries, enhance the level of strategic collaboration among the participating parties, and strengthen the ability to respond to various security threats.”

Shortly before Vladimir Putin announced the “special military operation” in Ukraine, China and Russia said they had a “no limits” partnership.

Some commentators have suggested the joint exercise is a sign of strengthening Sino-Russo relations, which could culminate in Beijing joining forces with Moscow.

William Courtney, Senior Fellow at the RAND Corporation, has, however, poured cold water on the warning.

He wrote in a post on Twitter: “The participation of China is only face-saving.

“It has declined to provide substantial support to Russia in its war against Ukraine.”
