We had just gotten back from kaiser after they sent us home while she was 5cm. They told us for her to go walk around the outlets. Not 30 mins later she calls me because she is having so much pain and needs to go back to the hospital. We did not make it back, i called 911 and they had emt sent over but even with there extremely fast respone time we had already delivered harper in our bathroom.

Shayanna Markham began having contractions and went to Kaiser Hospital in Vacaville, but said the doctors felt that she wasn’t ready to give birth. Her cervix was five centimeters dilated, and her contractions were every seven to eight minutes.

‘She would recommend that I either went home to labor longer and then, when it got five minutes apart or they got stronger, to come back or to walk around the outlets and dilate more,’ Shayanna said.

Shayanna and her husband returned home and just 30 minutes later, baby Harper decided it was time to make her entrance.

‘I just grabbed a towel from the towel rack and put it on the floor for some cushion,’ she told NBC Bay Area.

‘And, within a few seconds after filling her head, I pushed. I just couldn’t help. You just had to and I caught her. I was in there by myself because my husband went to go get his phone. It happened that fast.’

Her husband could be seen in the video running back out the front door as he rushed out to grab his cellphone from his truck.

But by the time he got back inside, the baby was already out.

First responders arrived at the house minutes later where they safely cut the umbilical cord

‘I was scared that the baby was stillborn,’ he said. ‘Just cause of the color she was and she wasn’t breathing at first or crying. She wasn’t making any noise. That’s why I started hitting her back to get her to cry at least.’

Anthony got on the phone with 911 and the dispatcher talked him through the next steps, including tying off the umbilical cord with a shoelace.

‘I didn’t have a roll of string by me. So, I looked down. I had a shoelace and I had a pocket knife on me. I cut my shoelace off to tie the umbilical cord,’ he said.

First responders arrived at the house minutes later where they helped Anthony safely cut the umbilical cord.

‘They put their clamps on and then, gave me their sterilized X-Acto knife to cut the cord,’ he said. ‘I did offer to use my pocket knife but they said no.’

Paramedics were then seen on the TikTok video wheeling mother and baby out the door and into the ambulance back to the hospital for evaluation.

Shayanna said hopes sharing her experience on social media and in the news could possibly help other so they aren’t put in the same situation

NBC Bay Area reached out to Kaiser Permanente for a comment about the ordeal, but a spokesperson said they could not speak on it due to patient privacy, but said deliveries can happen unexpectedly.

The new parents are just happy that baby Harper is OK. She’s now a month old and happy and healthy.

‘I’m super grateful that the baby’s OK, wife’s OK. Everyone’s alright. Everyone’s healthy,’ Anthony said.

The baby’s mother said hopes sharing her experience on social media and in the news could possibly help other so they aren’t put in the same situation.
