King Charles may “abdicate the throne when he is 80” and hand over the reins to his son, Prince William, one royal author has suggested.
The bombshell claim comes five months after King Charles’ historic May 6 Coronation at Westminster Abbey.
The day was filled with regal splendour, with royals turning up in all their finery and Britons partaking in street parties to mark the beginning of the monarch’s reign.
Expectations may be running high for Charles but he’ll be acutely aware that time is not on his side and he’s running out of steam already, opines Clive Irving, author of The Last Queen.
“I think Charles feels it’s his duty to serve having waited so long but he also knows he is the oldest person ever to have been Coronated,” he told Daily Express US.

Irving added: “I think it may already be surreptitiously planned that he will abdicate when he is 80.”
Were this to happen, William, who is first in line to the throne, would become king in six years.
“I think the deal has been done that when Charles is 80, he will quit and hand over [to William],” Irving surmised.
He continued: “And the extent to which he’s handing over stuff now is pretty clear. He knows that William is a much more appropriate face for the monarchy than he is.”

William and his wife, Princess Kate, have already proven they have what it takes, the royal author went on.
He said: “I think William and Kate do a really good job at balancing his [Charles] incapacity to connect because they do have the capacity to connect.”
Polling certainly suggests the Waleses’ have Britons on their side.
William and Kate were found to be the most popular royals in a recent YouGov survey.
The Prince of Wales has a favorability ranking of 74 percent, while Kate is at 72 percent. Princess Anne – Charles’s 73-year-old sister — comes in third at 73 percent, YouGov found.
