Charles and William’s ‘touching body language’ after making Coronation ‘pact’

King Charles and Prince William shared a "touching" moment in Westminster Abbey after seemingly making a "pact" for the Coronation today (Saturday. May 6).

The Prince of Wales played a significant role in his father's big day, pledging loyalty to the new monarch in a solemn rite.

The moment saw William, as next in line to the throne, kneel down to give an oath to Charles.

He said: "I, William, Prince of Wales, pledge my loyalty to you and faith and truth I will bear unto you, as your liege man of life and limb. So help me God."

William then got back to his feet before touching the St Edward's Crown on Charles' head and kissing his father on the cheek.

Charles, seemingly moved, nodded and said "amen" and "thank you, William".

Body language expert Judi James described the father-son moment as "touching" but reckons the pair came to some form of agreement prior to the ceremony.

She said: "Touching body language between Charles and William.

"The two men seemed to have made a pact to avoid too much eye contact during the ceremony, possibly because Charles did look in danger of getting overwhelmed with emotion at some points.

"There was a micro-glance as William tied his cape and then we could see William looking away as he did his pledge, although there was one moment after that when they met eye contact briefly and we got a look of warmth and gratitude from Charles to his son."

James also noted that the special moment piqued the interest of William's estranged brother Prince Harry.

She added: "Harry did seem to lift his head and crane his neck to watch this bit of the service."
