Titan victims could have been ‘incinerated’ in tragic blast

Mr Corley told the BBC that the time required for a complete collapse is about one millisecond and that the human brain responds instinctually to a stimulus at around 25 milliseconds.

He added that the human rational response, from sensing to acting, is thought to be around 150 milliseconds at best.

With regards to what happened to the crew members during the implosion, the BBC reported that the air inside a sub has a fairly high concentration of hydrocarbon vapours.

Mr Corley said that when the hull collapses, the air inside auto-ignited and an explosion follows the rapid implosion.

As a result of these forces, human bodies incinerate and are turned to ash and dust instantly.

Mr Corley’s comments come as speculation turns to how the remains of the five crew members will be returned to the surface.

Captain John Noble told Sky News: “They are at the bottom of the sea. They are now in a resting place, along with hundreds of Titanic passengers.

“The decision may well be to leave the Titan victims in peace where they are. And dare I say it, the cost to recover them would be astronomical.”

Attention has also turned to the US Navy, who allegedly knew the Titan had imploded four days before the deaths of the crew were announced.

The Wall Street Journal reported that a loud bang was captured through a network of acoustic sensors used to track enemy submarines.

Following this noise, the data was sent to the US Coastguard, but the data was not considered to be definitive.

As a result, the search and rescue operation continued until Thursday when the debris found was confirmed to be the Titan.

Speaking to the WSJ, a Navy official said: “The US Navy conducted an analysis of acoustic data and detected an anomaly consistent with an implosion or explosion in the general vicinity of where the Titan submersible was operating when communications were lost.

“While not definitive, this information was immediately shared with the incident commander to assist with the ongoing search and rescue mission.”
