Teacher took student to pub every week and downed pints before they had sex

A male teacher is accused of taking a student to the pub every week where he downed pints before having sex with him.

The unnamed 59-year-old is facing a fourth complaint after being accused of sexually assaulting six young men. One complainant says they did not know if they were "in a dream or awake" at the time of the abuse, Central Criminal Court heard.

Accusations from the 45-year-old fourth complainant say he and the accused would go to the pub in the evening, skipping class on a Wednesday afternoon in the mid-1990s where the accused would drink an alleged eight or nine pints.

One night in 1995, the victim says he stayed the night at the man's house and woke up the next day to find his boxer shorts had been pulled down.

The accuser claims the teacher performed oral sex on him. He said: "I didn’t know if I was in a dream or awake." The young man then performed oral sex on the teacher after being told "It's your turn now".

Prosecutor Anne-Marie Lawlor SC asked if the complainant had given permission for the teacher to "put his mouth on your penis" to which he replied "no". The complainant maintains the incident occurred without any prior engagement from him, The Journal reported.

He said: "I wasn’t in a good space. I couldn’t process what had just happened." The victim later said he felt a sense of "shock and shame, so I bottled it up and said nothing".

The jury heard a statement was given by the witness in July 2019 and when asked by counsel why he had not come forward before this, said he felt "ashamed" of the alleged incident.

He said: "I was ashamed, and after a year and a half of therapy, I had convinced myself that there was nothing to be ashamed about and not to bottle it up any longer."

The witness accepted he had used LSD and ecstasy at the time along with alcohol and marijuana. Michael O'Higgins, defending, suggested "all sexual activity between my client and you was consensual," which the witness disagreed with.

The teacher was in his 30s at the time of the alleged offences, while the complainants were then aged between 17 and 24.

He has pleaded not guilty to one count of attempted rape and eight counts of sexual assault on dates between March 1991 and November 1997 at locations in Co Dublin.

The trial continues.
