Russian airfields continue to come under threat as the key Engels site, 700km southeast of Moscow, saw air raid sirens pierce the night late yesterday evening. The airfield, which has acted as the launching pad for many of Russia’s recent airstrikes and was hit by a drone strike on Monday, sounded the alarm late on December 6, according to the Kyiv Independent – but district official Yevgeny Shpolsky said there was “no threat to civilian infrastructure”. The alarm follows a third attack on a Russian airfield on Tuesday, and while Ukraine has not claimed responsibility for any of the attacks, it has widely celebrated their effectiveness at exposing the apparent vulnerability of Russia’s air defence. It comes as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken repeated his country’s determination to provide Ukraine with the equipment it needs to defend itself, although added it had neither encouraged nor enabled the Ukrainians to strike inside Russia.

Vladimir Putin plans ‘necessary’ measures after second Ukraine drone hits Russia
On Tuesday morning, reports came in that an oil storage tank had exploded near Kursk city in the Bryansk region of Russia.
Roman Starovoyt, the Governor of Kursk, had blamed the attack on a Ukrainian drone, but Ukraine has not taken responsibility for the strike.
The Russian news outlet Baza reported that two drones “fell and exploded three meters from diesel fuel tanks.”
The media organisation said: “At this point, the five-ton tanks were empty and a serious fire was avoided.”
However, the explosion of the oil storage rank near an airbase did cause some fire, as video footage published on social media showed the area covered in thick black smoke.
