Met Office urgent snow warning as arctic blast batters Brits with sub zero temps

The UK is set to be battered by snow and ice today (Monday, March 6) as the Met Office confirms that the nation will suffer the coldest day of the year so far – and it will spark an absolute travel nightmare country-wide.

Since the start of 2023, the UK has been battling a variety of extreme weather, from flooding and heavy rain to snow storms and blizzards.

And it all came just six months after the country saw record-breaking heatwaves and scorched-Earth sun blasts.

The Met Office has confirmed that today will see horrific snow and ice, cutting some communities off from the rest of the country entirely, with a yellow weather warning issued.

The weather system will hit the north of England and Scotland first – from the tip of the Highlands to the bottom of Newcastle – with temperatures dropping as low as -4C in some areas.

The cold blast is coming directly from the Arctic, and has seen Met Office officials issue the warnings.

A spokesman said: “Snow showers are likely to cause some disruption to travel with a small chance of more widespread disruption for some.

“There is a small chance of travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel.

“There is a slight chance that some rural communities could become cut off, and a small chance of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces.”

Worryingly, they also predict that there is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected.

The weather system will move down the country throughout the day, hitting Manchester and Birmingham by nightfall, while London will be plunged into freezing ice by midnight for most of the following 24 hours.

Met Office forecaster Craig Snell said: “I would imagine you will see some sleet or snow in the south of England, even if it doesn’t cause any great disruption.

“But we are keeping a close eye on it.”

And the UK Health Security Agency has issued urgent warnings for anyone over the age of 65.

Dr Agostinho Sousa said: “If you have a pre-existing medical condition or are over the age of 65, it is important to try and heat your home to at least 18C if you can.”
