Met Office extends ice warnings as Arctic blast set to blanket Britain in snow

Brits are bracing themselves for lashings of snow and bitter temperatures as forecasters predict a chilling start to the week.

As thousands of people woke up to blankets of the white stuff, the Met Office warned that harsh conditions will continue into Monday.

It followed warnings of a return of the 2019 Beast from the East, The Express reported, as temperatures plummet -1C in parts of Scotland.

The Met Office has now put a yellow warning in place for ice across large parts of Scotland and the north east of England.

It covers the East Midlands, North East England, Central, Tayside and Fife, Grampian, Yorkshire and Humber, from 6pm today until 11am tomorrow.

Dumfries, Golloway, Laothian and Borders are also covered under the latest warnings.

The warning said: “Icy patches are expected to develop, especially on untreated surfaces, where snow has been melting on Sunday and where frequent showers occur through the night.

"Further hill snow is also possible above 200-300m, though less extensively than last night.”

Snow fell overnight giving Brits a frosty start to the day. Parts of the country were blanketed amid warnings of ice causing disruption on the roads.

The bitter conditions are set to stay with freezing fog and frost forecast.

Meteorologist Alex Burkill told The Express: "Obviously it's very cold and it's going to stay cold through this week.

"Whilst there will be some wintry hazards around, it's not really until the end of the week until we see any significant snow."

The Met Office said it will breezy and windy on Monday, with prolonged showers.

Monday to Wednesday will see chilling temperatures, especially in the south, while parts of Scotland set to freeze -5C temperatures.

The forecast continued: "Overnight frosts and icy stretches are also expected with temperatures below average.

"A chance that by the middle of January conditions may become a little less cold and unsettled for a time at least across the south, although wintry hazards are still possible in many areas."

Brits are bracing themselves for severe winter weather with January 2021 set to be a very cold and snowy month, according to the bookies.

It is almost three years since the "Beast from the East" battered the UK and hammered Britain with 20cm of snow.

The infamous blast saw a a -15C freeze blow in, leaving almost 20 people dead and causing disruption across the UK.

Britain is set to be hit by a blast of cold air blown in from Siberia after a sudden warming in the stratosphere caused winds to change in the polar vortex.

Forecasters have warned of a "sudden stratospheric warming" [SSW] above the Arctic, which could see temperatures plunge to -10C and snow to fall across the country.
