Meghan denied access to Queens death bed at last minute due to ‘tensions’

Meghan Markle was banned from being at the Queen's death bed at Balmoral at the last minute because tensions were so high, insiders claim.

Queen Elizabeth II tragically passed away at the age of 96 on Thursday (September 8) as members of her family including the new King Charles and Queen Camilla and heir to the throne Prince William hurried to be by her side in her final moments – although many arrived too late.

Prince Harry, one of the last to arrive to the Scottish residence, was reportedly supposed to be accompanied by his wife Meghan Markle as the pair hurried to say their goodbyes – before a sudden change of plan.

“Tensions were so high and there was no way Meghan could have gone to Balmoral,” a palace insider told The New York Post on the Friday following the monarch's death.

“The fact the Sussex camp did say both Harry and Meghan were going — and then quickly retracted that statement — will tell you everything you need to know about the drama behind the scenes."

The insider added: "Harry and Meghan do hate being separated from each other, so being alone in Scotland will have been very hard for Harry. No wonder why he left so early."

Her Majesty's death came just days after Meghan's latest bombshell interview, this time with glossy US mag The Cut, which saw her make a series of shocking allegations, including that Harry had "lost" his father after she and the Prince stepped down as working royals.

In the interview she claimed the pair had offered to move to a Commonwealth country when tensions in the UK became too much.

She said: "Just by existing, we were upsetting the dynamic of the hierarchy. So we go, ‘OK, fine, let’s get out of here. Happy to.'"

Just prior to the announcement of the monarch's death, royal correspondent Nicholas Witchell said on air: "[Meghan] might not be terribly warmly welcomed, to be perfectly candid about it.”

Markle and Harry have since reunited at Frogmore Cottage, where Harry is expected to remain until the Queen's state funeral on September 19.

It's not known whether Archie and Lilibet will join their parents in the UK, however it was revealed following the Her Majesty's death that the tots are now Prince and Princess, thanks to a rule made by King George V more than 100 years ago.

He said at the time: “The grandchildren of the sons of any such Sovereign in the direct male line – save only the eldest living son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales – shall have and enjoy in all occasions the style and title enjoyed by the children of Dukes of these Our Realms.”
