A man who stabbed his estranged wife and her friend to death in Denver has been sentenced to 80 years in prison.
Matthew Madden, 38, was sentenced Friday for the September 2021 deaths of Katherine “Katy” Pivoda and Jennifer Gelvin, according to the Denver District Attorney’s Office. Pivoda was estranged from Madden at the time. Both women died at the scene of multiple stab wounds.
The women were stabbed in the backyard of Pivoda’s home in the 2200 block of South Marion Street. Officers who responded to the attack found Madden inside the home covered in blood and holding a knife.
“This senseless act of violence affected not one but two families and the community as a whole,” said Chief Deputy District Attorney Effie Antonopoulos in a news release. “We believe that Jennifer was trying to help Katy when she was murdered by Matthew Madden.”
In April, Madden pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree homicide, according to the DA’s office. On Friday, Denver District Court Judge Nikea Bland sentenced Madden to serve 40 years for each victim’s death with consecutive terms.
