Maps turn red as Britain poised to bake days before King’s Coronation

UK weather: Met Office forecasts drier and brighter conditions

The UK has had its first taste of spring this week, and according to weather maps, hotter weather could be on the cards. The tide may be about to change in May, with temperatures already starting to ramp up towards the second half of April. Interactive models show a red plume of air pushing up from Spain and France on May 1, catapulting Britain’s mercury into the 20C range. 

The warmer air will be prevalent in the southern and central areas of England mostly, at first, bringing hopes of a warm weekend for the King’s Coronation on May 6.

With street parties planned and London buzzing with tourists and royal fans, many people will be keeping their fingers crossed for a rain-free long-weekend. 

Jim Dale, senior meteorologist at British Weather Services, said parts of Britain may have to tolerate some “mixed” conditions in the days leading up to May. But that the new month will mark the start of a strong push into summer. 

He told Express.co.uk: “It’s a long way off and the end of April doesn’t look so hot. However, as I have suggested previously, a change of the month will see a change to the weather. A very warm or hot spell is becoming overdue.”

While there cannot be a definitive forecast for the King’s Coronation weekend at the moment, Mr Dale, a weather author, said predictions at the moment can be positive.

He added: “It (high pressure) appears to be drifting that way but obviously it is too early to call it absolute. The air stream is out of the south so it is more likely than not at this stage.”

Weather maps currently go up to May 2, just four days before the Bank Holiday marking a presitigous occasion for the Royal Family and all of the country. 

While the finer details are yet to be established, the Met Office’s long-range forecast also shines a warm and sunny light on this period. 

Its predictions, updated daily, range from April 21 to May 14 – with the first fortnight of May appearing less definitive than the latter half of April. 

Covering the period April 21 to 30 it says some showers can be expected, but that it will be overall warmer than it has been. It says: “Most places staying settled and dry with sunny spells, the best of these to the north and west.

“Becoming cloudier through Friday and into the weekend, with a chance of showers, most likely towards the southeast although detail is uncertain.

“Most areas feeling reasonable in shelter and sunshine, though eastern coasts are likely to feel cooler in fresh easterly winds.

“High pressure is likely to remain centred to the north or northeast of the UK through late-April, leading to a fair amount of fine and dry weather persisting, although the chance of showers, mainly in the south, remains.”

“Temperatures likely rather warm to warm towards the end of the month, especially in the west and northwest. Some eastern coasts may stay cooler, and perhaps locally chilly overnight in sheltered parts.”

Looking ahead from April 30 to May 14 it adds: “Confidence in the forecast is low for the end of April towards mid-May.In general, there is a greater chance of a settled weather regime, maintaining the likelihood of clearer and drier conditions. 

“However, periods of more changeable and unsettled weather are still possible. Temperatures probably returning closer to average for the time of year.”
