Johnny Mercer's wife makes sly dig about celeb 'plastic surgery'

Now it’s Johnny Mercer’s wife vs Carol Vorderman round three! Defence minister’s spouse has sly dig at celebrities who enjoy ‘cheap cosmetic surgery’

  • Felicity Mercer joked about  celebrities who undergo ‘cheap cosmetic surgery’
  • Carol Vorderman has faced attacks over her criticism of the Conservative Party

The wife of a Conservative defence minister embroiled in a row with Carol Vorderman has made a thinly veiled jibe about the TV star’s appearance.

As the pair’s war of words intensified, Felicity Mercer – whose husband Johnny is responsible for veterans’ affairs – joked about undergoing plastic surgery.

Her tongue in cheek remark comes after repeated speculation that former Countdown star Vorderman has gone under the knife, rumours the 62 year old has consistently denied.

Vorderman has previously put her youthful appearance and toned figure down to intermittent fasting and regular workouts.

Last year, she documented her visit to an exclusive juice retreat in Portugal on Instagram, where 15 of her 18 days were spent consuming just juice.

Felicity Cornelius-Mercer (left), whose husband is Veterans Minister Johnny Mercer (right), said last night Ms Vorderman was a ‘celebrity attack dog’ and claimed she was ‘inciting people to hate all Tories’

Responding to a Twitter user who has superimposed Mr Bean actor Rowan Atkinson’s face onto hers, Mrs Mercer replied: ‘I had a lovely holiday in Turkey last week.

‘Took advantage of the cheap cosmetic surgery to give my face a new lease of life. Got to keep up with all those celebs doing it and they do seem so keen on us Mercer’s (sic)’

Earlier this week, qualified lifeguard Mercer slammed Vorderman for ‘inciting people to hate all Tories’, and described her as a ‘celebrity attack dog’ who drives her ‘up the fucking wall’.

But maths expert Vorderman hit back with a tweet, describing Felicity, 43, and Johnny, 41, as the ‘Neil and Christine Hamilton of today’.

Mrs Mercer, 43, first came to wider public attention in 2018 when her husband accused a Twitter user of suggesting his wife was a prostitute in the comment section of a local paper website.

She described former prime minister Liz Truss as an ‘imbecile’ for previously sacking her ex-army Plymouth MP husband from government.

In a no holds barred attack earlier this week, Mrs Mercer said Vorderman should be stripped of her RAF ‘Honorary Group Captain’ title because she ‘shouldn’t be political’.

Speaking to Rachel Johnson on the Difficult Women podcast, she said: ‘I don’t know what it is, she just drives me up the f***ing wall.

‘For me, it’s this idea of celebrity attack dogs that know nothing about politics.

‘I understand everyone has an opinion on politics, but for me it’s this blanket hatred of, it’s like inciting people to hate all Tories.

‘If you dig deeper, there are so many Tory MPs – they’re all very different.

‘You can’t blanket hate. This is what Vorderman seems to be doing. She keeps using words like ‘disgusting’.

‘I find it really hard.

The former Countdown presenter has previously called Conservative MPs ‘disgusting’ and a ‘lying bunch of charlatans’

‘For me also, she’s an Honorary Group Captain, she should be stripped of that because she shouldn’t be political.’

Cambridge grad Vorderman became the first non-royalty woman to be named Honorary Group Captain in the RAF in 2017, as an ambassador to the Air Cadets.

As she hit back on Twitter, Vorderman claimed Mrs Mercer – who works for her husband’s parliamentary office – is paid ‘more than an army officer and twice as much as a young soldier’.

Former Tory MP Neil Hamilton was accused of taking bribes as part of the 1994 ‘cash for questions scandal’. Christine Hamilton worked as her husband’s secretary following their 1983 marriage.

Vorderman said: ‘[Mercer] said yesterday military personnel don’t need to go to food banks. He earns over £110,000 as a Minister and pays her in his office £35-40,000.

‘She’s paid more than Army officer and twice more than young soldier.

‘…The Neil and Christine Hamilton of today?’

In 2018 Mr Mercer – who rose to the rank of captain and carried out three tours of Afghanistan – became involved in a bizarre row about his wife on social media.

Writing on Twitter, he asked a user: ‘I’ll give you one chance at honesty. Did you insinuate my wife was a prostitute on the Plymouth Herald’s comment section?’
