Honey hunter stung to death by deadly bees left hanging lifeless from tree

A man has been killed while collecting honey after the bees turned on him.

From Thailand, 51-year-old Thongphan Jitchomphu had been in Phu Phan National Park in the Isaan province of Kalasin on the hunt for honey with pals.

He was discovered suspended by a vine 10 feet above the forest floor.

Hanging from the foliage, he was discovered by rescuers to be covered in bee stings on both his face and body.

Efforts to get him down were made by both locals and emergency services, Thaiger reports.

Thongphan’s friend, Somsak, had been with him on the honey-gathering expedition.

He was doing it for the first time and discovered and reported what happened to the more experienced Thongphan to emergency services.

He explained how his friend had told him to stay on the ground while he went up to try and get honey from a particular hive.

Thongphan used a fire torch to try and smoke the bees out of the hive and donned a balaclava to protect his face, Somsak said.

But something went wrong, with Somsak alerted to a problem by a shout from Thongphan.

When he returned to check, he found him hanging from the vines, unresponsive.

The vine was wrapped around his ankle and Somsak ran to a nearby settlement to get help.

However, by the time they returned, it was too late.

The hot weather and smoke from the torch could have contributed to the severity of his reaction, local rescuer Kongkham Phonyium said.

His body has been sent for an autopsy at a nearby hospital, however, there is a possibility he could have been allergic to bee stings.
