THE worst times to travel during the Coronation Bank Holiday weekend have been revealed.

Thousands of motorists have already taken to the roads before King Charles' coronation tomorrow with traffic building throughout the morning.

But those heading to the capital for the grand occasion on Saturday have been warned when to avoid travelling.

Friday afternoon will see the worst of the traffic according to the RAC.

And the motor services company said there will also be "added congestion" during the rest of the long weekend.

The RAC said: "Travel times will likely peak on Friday afternoon with some areas seeing double the travel times as holiday travellers mix with commuters, but drivers should be prepared for added congestion throughout the holiday weekend.”

Those travelling after 8pm today will likely have the best shot at avoiding gridlock.

The RAC added that 10am to 8pm tomorrow would see heavy traffic on motorways including the M5 and M25.

While Sunday's traffic predictions thankfully look a lot clearer for those taking to the roads.

Those heading to London have been urged to plan ahead or find alternative routes.

In particular, visitors have been advised against driving into central London on the weekend of the coronation.

Transport for London (TfL) warned that road closures and security measures will make driving difficult and vehicles will need special accreditation to access some areas.

Road closure are due to begin today at 7pm and a large number of roads in central London will be closed over the weekend to allow crowds to watch the procession between Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey. 

Train bosses have also warned of "extremely busy" services on the day of Charles' crowning.

Despite adding extra carriages, cramped scenes are expected as well-wishers on the Birmingham to London line head down to the capital.

The coronation ceremony of King Charles takes place at Westminister Abbey and will be Britain's first coronation in seven decades since Queen Elizabeth II was crowned in 1953.

The two-hour ceremony is set to take place at 11 am with the key moment taking place at midday, when the King is crowned.

People up and down the country will be watching the historic event, with many having street parties and garden parties to celebrate.

But the weather could be set to put a dampener on some of the party plans.

Conditions in the UK are set to be "unsettled" today, with "showers or longer spells of rain for many" according to Met Office forecasters.

The day of the coronation is not looking much brighter and is forecast to be another cloudy, wet day for many.
