British player is found dead in France where World Military Rugby Championship is being held

A British armed forces rugby player was found dead on Tuesday in France’s Brittany region where the World Defence Rugby competition is being held, a prosecutor said.

Shortly after the player was reported missing, his body was discovered on a rocky stretch of coast in Dinard, a popular seaside resort in northern Brittany, local prosecutor Fabrice Tremel told AFP.

Two team coaches confirmed the identity of the player, whose team is based in Dinard during the competition.

Ouest France reports that the discovery was made at around the same time that the team had reported him missing.

Mr Tremel told the news outlet: ‘In parallel with the discovery of the body, a report was made to the Saint-Malo police station by the English rugby military team in connection with the disappearance of one of their players.

‘The body has been identified by his two coaches.’

Investigators believe the player may have died in an accidental fall, but an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, Tremel said. 

The World Defence Rugby competition – also known as the World Military Rugby Championship – brings together military teams from 12 allied nations.

The championship is being played in 26 Brittany venues until September 10, and features 500 players and staff.

In their most recent match, Britain beat Spain in the final group-stage encounter and go on to play Fiji in the semi-final on Sunday.
