Baby born with third arm growing from its back in ‘extremely rare’ miracle birth

A miracle tot has been born with an extremely rare condition that gives it a third hand that is growing from its back.

Doctors diagnosed the baby, who was born in a hospital in Rajasthan, north India, with polymelia after the third limb was seen sprouting from its back.

Polymelia, a condition where a person is born with extra limbs, is an incredibly rare medical condition that has so far only been reported a handful of times.

The third limb, seen in a video that was posted to the internet shortly after the baby was born, is much shorter than the baby’s other two, with the “hand” at the end only having three “fingers”.

The video of the baby can be seen still attached to its mum’s umbilical cord, indicating how recent the birth was before the video was taken.

Mum Prosuta Suman has not yet revealed the baby’s name, sex or method of delivery.

While polymelia is extremely rare, physicians now roughly understand how extra arms form during pregnancy.

As a foetus develops, two pairs of fleshy buds appear at the four or five week mark that eventually become its limbs.

However, these buds can occasionally be disrupted and disturbed, leading to more buds forming which develop into extra limbs.

Disturbances can happen later in the foetus’ development, which may explain why the extra limbs are often less developed than the others.

Babies can also be born with extra limbs in cases of conjoined twins, where one embryo has almost completely withered away.

In previous cases of polymelia, the extra limbs have been amputated to make sure they don’t interfere with a child’s development.

In 2016, a baby girl from Delhi, northern India, was born with an extra leg sprouting from her back.

Varsha Sena was born with two legs but also had a third limb that was growing sideways out of her spine.

Doctors at the Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital were able to successfully amputate the unwanted third leg at the end of last month.
