Jacob Rees-Mogg says Government trans u-turn endangers children
Jacob Rees-Mogg has warned the Government that any u-turn on plans to prevent children changing their gender at school would represent a failure to safeguard kids.
Mr Rees-Mogg reacted to reports from the last day, which suggested the 2010 Equality Act was preventing a crackdown, and the legislation will no longer be included in the King’s Speech.
Tory attorney general Victoria Prentis is said to have warned that the plans could be unlawful, after ministers asked for legal advice about banning social transitioning at schools.
The law would prevent children from using another pronoun or wearing the uniform of the opposite sex.
Last night No. 10 insisted that “no decisions have been taken” on whether legal changes can be made, and this afternoon a Government spokesman said “We recognise the need to do this as quickly as possible”.

“But more information is needed about the long-term implications of a child acting as though they are the opposite sex and we need to take care to understand how such action affects other children in the school or college.”
He added: “That’s why we’re taking this additional time”, implying a potential delay to the law.
This evening Mr Rees-Mogg said a “failure of Government would be a failure of the duty to safeguard children”.
“Allowing those in school to wear the opposite sex’s uniform or demand they get called by their chosen pronoun sets a dangerous precedent.
“A paper from Policy Exchange revealed a number of schools were even failing to tell parents that pupils had been questioning their gender identity.”

Mr Rees-Mogg said he hopes the Government “sees sense” and implements the PM’s pledge to tackle the problem of children transitioning in schools.
The GB News presenter also took aim at Great Ormond Street Hospital, after a memorandum leaked today revealed they were advising staff to stop using gendered language, “or else people may feel ‘triggered’”.
“I think the only thing that’s been triggered is a wave of mirth as we observe the latest development in wokedom!”
The former Cabinet Minister added: “I think you have to treat everybody sympathetically, even if you think they’re doing something that isn’t necessarily in their best interests”.
A spokesman for Great Ormond Street Hospital said: “We want all of our staff at GOSH to feel welcome and included at work in an environment that respects them for who they are, as well as the job they do”.
“Anyone discriminating against another individual on the basis of race, gender, sexuality or any other protected characteristic will be addressed via our official Dignity at Work policy.”
