Farage warns ‘the Remainers are back in charge’ after Raab resignation

Nigel Farage has claimed that Remainers are back in charge of Rishi Sunak’s government after Dominic Raab was forced out last week following bullying allegations. Mr Raab claimed he was “the victim” of “activist” Remainer civil servants and his two roles in government see Remainers as replacements.

Mr Raab’s role as Deputy Prime Minister was handed to Oliver Dowden, the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster; while his old job of Justice Secretary went to Alex Chalk.

Both Mr Dowden and Mr Chalk supported Remain in the referendum in 2016 while Mr Raab was a leading Brexiteer.

It means that 21 of the ministers around the Cabinet table in Rishi Sunak’s government backed Remain while just eight supported Brexit.

Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch was not an MP in 2016 but has said she supported Brexit bringing the figure up to nine.

Mr Farage told Express.co.uk: “Despite the hard-fought battles of 2019, the Remainers are back in charge of the Tory party and business as usual politics has returned.

“The Conservatives only (slowly and painfully) went for Brexit because they were forced to, but they never truly believed in it.

“These figures show we now have a Remainer, Centrist, Blairite cabinet – lead by a Prime Minister who tells us he voted for Brexit… but with very little evidence to prove it.”

While, the Johnson and Truss cabinets also had a majority of former Remainers, the issue has become more acute under Mr Sunak.

Tory MPs noted the list of possible replacements for a leading Brexiteer after Mr Raab’s departure were all previous Remainers and Mr Sunak eventually settled on Mr Chalk.

Some MPs also said Mr Johnson’s cabinets included three Brexit spartans – Theresa Villiers, Priti Patel and Suella Braverman – who all held out against Theresa May’s compromise deal.

Also around the cabinet table was former European Research Group (ERG) chairman, Jacob Rees-Mogg.

The only “spartan” at the top table now is the Home Secretary Suella Braverman.

Sunak’s government has been criticised over its handling of the Windsor Framework on Northern Ireland, which was opposed by Boris Johnson and other Brexiteers over fears it failed to restore Northern Ireland’s sovereignty in the UK.

One Brexiteer former minister told Express.co.uk: “It’s all an appalling mess at the moment. It’s less the Remainers taking charge, more the careerists.

“None of them want to do anything, they are just letting things drift and all the hard work we put in is going to waste.”
