Chinese Bitcoin mining hardware maker Bitmain Technologies launched a 50MW mining farm in Rockdale, Texas, which can be expanded to a capacity of more than 300MW, to make it one of the the largest bitcoin mining facilities in the world.
Canadian technology firm DMG Blockchain Solutions will provide hosting and management services for the Texas facility. Bitmain and DMG will work together to expand the capacity and to ensure efficient operations of Bitmain’s mining hardware.
DMG and Bitmain have agreed to work with the local workforce commission and also intend to work with local suppliers as preferred vendors to support the ongoing construction of the data center.
The mining farm is being powered by Bitmain using energy purchased directly from the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), which operates the electric grid in Rockdale, Texas.
Additionally, Bitmain also plans to provide education and training on blockchain technology and mining data center operations by working with the local school district to help the community.
The construction of the initial 25MW of the mining farm is being done on a 33,000 acre site at a former aluminum smelting facility Alcoa in the city of Rockdale in Milam County of Texas. The construction had begun in 2018.
The cryptocurrency mining farm in Texas is the third cryptocurrency mine project invested in by Bitmain in the US, one of the company’s most strategic overseas locations. Texas is the second largest state in the U.S. by both area and population.
The mining farm is part of Bitmain’s strategy to invest more than $500 million to set up a new crypto mining facility and blockchain data center in the U.S. State of Texas. The mining major will make the investment over an initial period of seven years.
