A woman in her 20s has died after being attacked by a dog in Caterham, Surrey.

The horrific attack took place at around 2.45pm today (January 12).

A second person is in hospital, but her condition is "not life-threatening," Surrey Police has said.

Armed police detained seven dogs from what is believed to be the owner, with the help of National Police Air Service.

The woman was treated at the scene in Gravelley Hill but was pronounced dead at the time.

Chief Inspector Alan Sproston said: “Our thoughts are with the family of the woman who sadly died this afternoon.

"This incident will be concerning to the local community and I would like to reassure them that we believe all dogs have been accounted for and are in police custody.

“Our investigation to establish the circumstances of the incident remains ongoing and we would ask the community not to speculate.”

Several road closures are in place around Gravelly Hill and officers remain at the scene.

No further details about the woman who has died or the dog breed has been released by the police.

The Daily Star has contacted them for further comment.

The attack comes just 48 hours after an 11-year-old boy had over half of his scalp torn off by a vicious pack of pit bulls in a horrifying attack that left the youngster in hospital.

Justin Gilstrap, 11, was riding his bike in Grovetown, Georgia, when a pack of three pit bulls started to attack him, pulling the boy into a ditch and nearly tearing his ears off.

The youngster was left with a torn scalp and bite wounds to the legs following the brutal attack in the United States, where police confirmed the youngster had been badly wounded.

A multitude of surgeries have since been carried out on restoring the scalp of the youngster, which 70% was torn off in the attack.
