A woman who discovered mystery marks on her letterbox and front gate was horrified after learning they could have a dark meaning.
The homeowner first noticed some red markings had appeared at her property in Geelong, Australia, a few weeks ago and took to a community Facebook group after growing "concerned" as new marks continued to appear.
"I found this red marking on my letter box a couple of weeks ago, and today I saw a fresh red mark on my side gate, it's in line with the lock," she said, as reported by the Daily Mail.

"I'm getting concerned because two nights ago, the gate on the opposite side of the house was open.
"I put it down to the wind, even though it's a very difficult gate to open. Has anyone seen anything similar or had it happen to them?"
Social media users were quick to pile in with many warning the woman the strange marks could be a code used by thieves looking to steal dogs for fights.
"I've heard of [people] doing this and stealing dogs for illegal fighting," one person warned. "Scrub it off and keep dogs inside."
A second added: 'If you own a dog… keep it safe indoors if no one's home! They mark property and attempt to steal dog/s later at night it when no one's home."

It's unclear whether or not the woman has any dogs.
But even if she doesn't own pets, other commenters said the markings could symbolise something just as menacing.
"We had this a few years ago with yellow paint/markings," someone else chimed in. "Usually means someone has been checking out your property, seeing stuff they like and can access and marking it as a target, so they come back to it."
Others recommended the woman tell police about the marks and to install security cameras.
It's not the first time something like this has taken place. In Adelaide, one homeowner spotted black markings in his neighbourhood and determined they were a "secret code used by burglars."
The worried local spotted the letters "NT" and "S" had been scrawled on certain properties, as well as lines that appeared to be tally marks.
Taking to Reddit, they asked: "Found these marked on our fence and back door entrance. They appeared overnight. Thoughts? Could the house be marked for a burglary?"
Some Reddit users said the markings could simply be graffiti by local vandals, while others said they were more likely to be a code used by thieves.
"Peeps looking to break into your property. NT =no threat, S= security," one user wrote, adding: "The marks are usually the numbers of days they've been watching your place/how many times you use an entrance in a day."
Another chimed in: "NT means 'No Threat', as in you've got no security. Best to remove the markings ASAP."
South Australia Police have since urged anyone who finds markings like the ones detailed by the two concerned residents to report it.
A spokesperson said: "If this has occurred we would encourage anyone who finds suspicious markings at their property, or notices anyone acting suspiciously in the area, to contact police and report the matter."
