Wild photos show aftermath of deadly Arctic bomb with ice pits and frozen houses

Crazy pictures have revealed the extent of the horror blizzard that turned parts of the United States into a “war zone” with severe snow and winds causing people to freeze to death.

Freak weather conditions from Canada to the Mexican border have claimed at least 56 victims, with 27 deaths reported in the Buffalo region alone.

Freezing residents have been advised to not brave the life-threatening weather, with several posting shocking photos online that expose the brutal conditions.

One snap shows a fountain that has seen its flowing water turn into ice amid reports of temperatures dropping as low as -50F (-45C).

Another showed a poor bloke who had turned so chilly that his beard began to freeze, with Governor Kathy Hochul, a native of Buffalo, admitting: "It is like going to a war zone, and the vehicles along the sides of the roads are shocking.

"This is a war with mother nature and she has been hitting us with everything she has."

The killer snowstorm dumped 30.4 inches of snow on Buffalo's airport on Christmas Eve, with winds of up to 60 mphs wreaking havoc up until yesterday (December 26).

Locals were pictured wading through snow so high that engulfed almost half their body, whilst even houses were unsafe as blankets of thick snow cut off energy supplies.

Vehicles were plunged into difficulty throughout the whole area, with stranded drivers left battling for their lives with temperatures dropping as they remained trapped in their vehicles.

Frantic emergency services were left helpless on several occasions, with rescue teams often unable to get through the thick snow or becoming stuck themselves.

Sadly, one man was even found dead face down in the snow after celebrating his 56th birthday on Christmas Eve.

William Clay was recorded in a video which has circulated online, showing his body submerged in snow having found himself stuck outside and ultimately succumbing to the freezing weather.

His family members identified the body shortly after they'd reported him missing on December 24.

The terrifying winter storm – dubbed a “bomb cyclone” – is caused by a freak plummet of pressure in the atmosphere.

US president Joe Biden pledged "the full force of the federal government" to support New York state.

Weather experts say they expect the worst of the storm to be over, but warned locals to still avoid travelling unless essential.
