Two-year-old dies after mum forgets about her in scorching hot car for 15 hours

A toddler was left to die in a hot car for 15 hours after her mum forgot about her.

Parents Kathreen Adams and Christopher McLean, from Florida, US, have been arrested after their two-year-old daughter died inside the car. Her body temperature reached a shocking 41.6C.

Their other child, aged four, was also inside the car but managed to escape – they are now under the care of Child Protective Services in Florida.

The mother of the two children called emergency services to report that the youngest was unresponsive.

They arrived on the scene and administered CPR, but sadly the child could not be revived, NBC News reports.

In a press conference, Holmes County Sheriff John Tate said that the mother eventually admitted that she forgot her children were sleeping in the car and left them from midnight until 3pm the next day (Tuesday, May 16).

He said: “The baby was asleep in the car seat. They decided to leave the child in the car and went inside and ultimately fell asleep and did not wake up or did not realise that the child was in the car until around 3.41 that afternoon.”

The police also searched the couple's home and found methamphetamine and marijuana.

This prompted Sheriff Tate to issue and urgent warning to the community.

He said: “Don't do drugs.

“I honestly believe methamphetamine, drugs is the culprit behind this death."

“That's what happens when you use drugs, you lose sense of what's going on in reality and this kind of stuff happens

“Probably if they wasn't on drugs, we probably wouldn't be here today.”

Adams and McLean were arrested and initially charged with child neglect, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of drug paraphernalia, but Sheriff Tate went on to confirm that additional charges would be made against the couple once the autopsy of the child had been completed.
