Trump joked his model girlfriend Kara Young got her ‘beauty’ from her black mother and ‘intelligence’ from white father and assumed staffers of color were WAITERS at White House meeting, new book claims
- Trump remarked to Young she had gotten her looks from her black mother and her ‘intelligence’ from ‘her dad, the white side’
- The former president laughed at his own joke, Young did not
- Young and Trump dated from around 1997-1999
- That relationship seemingly overlapped with when he met and started dating another model, former first lady Melania in 1998
- Trump also once turned to a group of racially diverse congressional staffers and asked them to bring out the hors d’oeuvres, mistaking them for the wait staff
Former President Trump once joked that his biracial model ex-girlfriend got her ‘beauty’ from her black parent and her ‘intelligence’ from her white parent, according to a new book.
Soon after meeting Young’s parents, Trump remarked to his then-girlfriend how she had gotten her looks from her black mother and her ‘intelligence’ from ‘her dad, the white side.’ The former president laughed at his own joke, Young did not.
Young and Trump dated from around 1997-1999 after meeting in the Hamptons, New York. That relationship seemingly overlapped with when he met and started dating another model, former first lady Melania in 1998, all the while still in the process of divorcing his second wife Marla Maples. Trump and Melania Knauss dated on and off until marrying in 2005.

The new anecdote comes from Confidence Man, by New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman, and was first reported by Rolling Stone.
Young in 2017 defended Trump against accusations of racism. ‘I never heard him say a disparaging comment towards any race of people,’ she told the Times.
Asked whether he supported white supremacist ideals, she said at the time: ‘That was not my experience.’
The president, who had three marriages, was known for dating models before he settled down with first lady Melania Trump.
He also dated models Kylie Bax and Rowanne Brewer Lane and dated tennis player Allison Giannini in the late 1990s.
In a 2017 interview Young detailed another incident where Trump expressed surprise that Serena and Venus Williams drew a racially diverse crowd at the U.S. Open, as he had thought black people were uninterested in tennis.
In another moment reported in Haberman’s book, Trump in January 2017 held a reception at the White House to meet with congressional leaders.
At one point, the former president turned to a group of racially diverse staffers and asked them to bring out the hors d’oeuvres, mistaking them for the wait staff.
‘Why don’t you get’ the food, Trump asked the wait staff.
Then-White House chief of staff Reince Preibus rushed to correct Trump’s flub, telling him he’d just addressed top congressional aides and signaling to the actual wait staff.

In his own tell all former national security adviser John Bolton noted that Trump once told him he didn’t like to be dumped, instead preferring to end any relationships with women, an observation then-chief of staff John Kelly found revealing.
Trump told Bolton ‘how with the women he had dated, he never liked to have them break up with him; he always wanted to be the one doing the breaking up. (‘Very revealing,’ said Kelly when I told him later),’ Bolton writes in his memoir.
