Prince William and Kate Middleton are going to have a “tense” evening without speaking tonight, the Prince of Wales admitted.

And it's all thanks to the rugby.

The royal couple were in attendance as England thrashed rivals Wales 20-10 in Cardiff earlier today (February 25).

And it was during a pre-match meeting with injured players supported by the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust where the Prince told how an England win would spell disaster for them.

William is patron of the Welsh Rugby Union, while Kate is patron of the Rugby Football Union in England.

During a special reception where he referred to the possibility of the game being cancelled due to a wage dispute forcing Wales to threaten strike action, he said: “I’m looking forward to today. We need a little lift after the past week, don’t we?

“It’s going to be a very tense journey home. If we win today my wife won’t speak to me. It will be a tense evening.”

And Kate chimed in: “The atmosphere is always second-to-none, so I’m looking forward to that.”

She also told how son Prince George is trying to learn the game of rugby by way of actually tackling rather than playing the non-contact version.

She said: “They are trying to teach him the rules.

“They move them around for their confidence, because he is tall, he has the physique."

The pair watched the game and got slightly more than they bargained for thanks to England's full-back Freddie Steward.

He suffered an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction just minutes into the Six Nations game when his shorts rolled down his legs, exposing his backside for the entirety of the Principality Stadium, and those watching on TV, to see after Welshman Taulupe Faletau missed his tackle.

And while the moment will no doubt be embarrassing for the player, it could be the tonic and ice-breaker that the royal couple need in order to reconnect on their way home from the game.
