The worst train station in Europe named as half of passengers suffer delays

They are famous for their time-keeping and engineering, so it’s surprising that a train station in Germany has taken the bottom spot in a survey of customer satisfaction.

Bremen Hauptbahnhof, in the north west of the country, has been servicing passengers since the 1840s and is an important stop on the line to Hannover.

But according to the annual European Railway Station Index the historic arched railway hub is on track to be the worst in the region with more than ’43 percent of trains delayed’.

The metric also found that passengers waited on average 11 minutes to buy a ticket, “no access to free wifi”, and “only nine shops”.

Some recent reviews on the travel site Tripadvisor said “compensation is offered only after delays of 60 minutes or more” compared to “15 minutes in the UK”.

One person wrote: “I am sorry to say that, separate from strike action, over all the service (punctuality, reliability) was bad to very bad.”

Another reviewer said the station itself had a problem with begging, observing that as a first impression to Bremen the “Hauptbahnhof was terrible”.

However, some positives were to be found with many appreciating the historic facade that still adorns the building which has been modernised inside.

A reviewer wrote: “As we travelled by train, we saw the station twice. Arriving at the station, we did not find it remarkable, but approaching it on our return journey we recognised the building had a wow factor.”

Euronews travel reports Zurich Hauptbahnhof in Switzerland remained in first place in the railway poll after also taking the crown in 2022.

Only three percent of trains were delayed and Swiss transport location had an astonishing “106 shops and kiosks and 53 restaurants”.
