Russian forces would be "annihilated" by the West if Putin were to use nukes in Ukraine, the EU's has warned.
On Thursday (October 13), at the opening of a Diplomatic Academy in Belgium, foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell said: "Putin is saying he is not bluffing.
"Well, he cannot afford bluffing, and it has to be clear that the people supporting Ukraine and the European Union and the Member States, and the United States and NATO are not bluffing neither."

Any nuclear attack against Ukraine will create an answer, not a nuclear answer but such a powerful answer from the military side that the Russian Army will be annihilated."
Fears over a nuclear conflict erupting are gathering pace as Putin sees his beleaguered Russian army become increasingly bogged down in Ukraine while NATO chief Jens Stoltenbergy has said there would be "severe consequences" if Russia were to launch a nuclear attack.
"The fundamental purpose of NATO's nuclear deterrent is to preserve peace and deter aggression and prevent coercion against NATO allies," Stoltenberg said.
Circumstances in which NATO might have to use nuclear weapons are extremely remote.
The rhetoric has continued to escalate, with Russia threatening World War Three if Ukraine were to be granted NATO membership.
"Kyiv is well aware that such a step would mean a guaranteed escalation to World War Three," Alexander Venediktov, the deputy secretary of Russia's Security Council, has been quoted as saying.
Venediktov, a powerful Putin ally, dismissed Ukraines's NATO ambition as propaganda.
"Apparently, that's what they are counting on – to create informational noise and draw attention to themselves once again."
"The suicidal nature of such a step is understood by NATO members themselves," he added.
Earlier this month Ukraine's economy was reported to have shrank by 35% due to the war.
