  • Ukraine has been stepping up its drone strikes on Russia in recent weeks

A Russian region has declared a ‘state of emergency’ after its governor claimed that a Ukrainian drone caused significant damage to an apartment block.

Governor of western Russian region Belgorod, Vyacheslav Gladkov, claimed in a Telegram post that a building in the city of Belgorod was damaged by a ‘UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) attack’, but added that the ‘reasons for the incident are being established.

He also shared several photos of smashed windows and shattered building tiles at a multi-story building, as well as a fragment with concentric blue and yellow circles the color of the Ukrainian flag.

The governor said that the attack, which took place at around 5:45 pm today in the south of the city, resulted in no casualities.

It comes just hours after Russia’s defence ministry said that three drones were shot down over Belogrod, which another was taken out over the neighbouring Kursk region.

The latest attack comes as Ukraine has stepped up the number of UAV attacks against Russia itself

The latest attack comes as Ukraine has stepped up the number of UAV attacks against Russia itself, with fresh strikes launched on Moscow just this week.

Earlier this month, Ukrainian drones damaged government offices in the capital, and on Thursday Russia said it downed two drones headed for Moscow, a day after two others were destroyed on approach.

Targets included the west of the capital near the Karamyshinsky hydroelectric power station.

The attacks led to the closure of airspace over Moscow’s Vnukovo international airport and Kaluga city, 125 miles to the south west.

At least two drones were reported, with one filmed buzzing the Russian capital. A drone was said to have been shot down by Russia, while there were also reports of an explosion in Krasnogorsk in north-west Moscow.
