A mother says she had to rescue her ‘panicking’ elderly neighbour who was trapped inside her own apartment – after a Yodel delivery driver ‘jammed a parcel under her door handle’.

Charlie Clarke claims she and son George, 20, heard neighbour Dee shouting for help from the flat below on Thursday.

Dee, who is believed to be in her 70s, was stood on her raised patio on the ground floor claiming that her door handle wouldn’t turn and she couldn’t get out.

Charlie, 39, rushed downstairs to help and found a tall package propped up against the door, blocking the handle and leaving her neighbour imprisoned in the flat.

The lash technician moved the parcel so that Dee was able to leave and the panicked pensioner said that if Charlie wasn’t home she would have called the fire brigade.

Yodel today said it was investigating and would take appropriate action if warranted.

She slammed the Yodel driver for their alleged ‘incompetence’ and pointed out how dangerous it could have been if there was a fire.

Yodel confirmed they were carrying out a ‘full investigation’ of what happened.

Charlie, from Crystal Palace, London, said: ‘It’s absolutely shocking. Delivery drivers are so careless. It was so bad.

‘Was it malicious or just complete carelessness? I think it’s just incompetence. It could have been really dangerous. It’s definitely a fire hazard.

‘My son came in and said Dee was calling me from down on her patio. She said she couldn’t open the door it was jammed.

‘I told her not to worry and I went down. The parcel was in front of the door so I took a quick picture and moved it out the way.

‘She was panicking a little bit. She didn’t know what was wrong with the door because the handle was moving a little bit.

‘She said if I wasn’t in, she would have called the fire brigade but she was absolutely fine. I managed to rescue her.’

Charlie claims Dee hadn’t heard a knock at the door and the parcel wasn’t even addressed to her.

The problem package sparked debate online when the location was revealed on the internet

She also said that the hallway is large so there would have been plenty of space for the driver to leave the package without blocking the door.

Charlie said: ‘There’s ample space either side of the door.

‘It’s a communal hallway and he put it right under her handle. What a d*ckhead.’

Charlie tracked down the person the parcel was addressed to and arranged for them to come and collect it.

Charlie said: ‘I asked if she was expecting it and she wasn’t. It wasn’t even for her. It was for a completely different postcode.

‘The companies that use these drivers must be losing thousands in stock. We could have easily kept it. It’s crazy.’

A Yodel spokesperson said: ‘The safe delivery of parcels is our number one priority. We have protocols in place for parcel delivery and the overwhelming majority are delivered correctly first time.

‘We are in the process of carrying out a full investigation on this situation and will take appropriate action once this has come to a conclusion.’
