Brits slam miserable council killjoys who cut down estate’s Christmas tree

Council leaders have been slammed for plans to chop down a unique Christmas tree which was decorated by locals.

The tree, found on Sutcliffe Avenue in Nunsthorpe, Grimsby, had been given a festive makeover with a difference by locals as a “harmless” joke.

It was done because no “official” Christmas trees existed outdoors in the area, and tackled the issue of littering in the area.

But North East Lincolnshire Council have decided to take the Grinch route this festive season and after originally saying they had planned to leave the decorations until after Christmas, now they say it has been an "eyesore" and a "hazard" with rubbish accumulating around it.

And they weren't totally wrong, as the tree had actually been decorated with beer cans and bottles found on the street.

But this didn't stop locals getting angry about it, however.

Comments on a video of the tree on social media, one wrote: “Better than just being thrown all over the streets – harmless fun I'd say.”

Another wrote: “Council should cut it all back and empty the bins more often it won't look so messy even at the back of the shops and flats.

“What a disgrace for our children to see they ought to be ashamed.”

And a third posted: “Maybe if you don't like it then stop throwing cans and bottles everywhere put them in the bin, that's a good statement I think.”

However, a council spokesman said: “This started out as a few decorations on the tree in the middle of this shrubbery.

"We recently pruned the other shrubs nearby but people in the area said we could leave this one until after Christmas as it looked quite nice.

"Unfortunately, it’s now overloaded with bottles and cans and has become an eyesore and a hazard. We will be clearing the litter and cutting back the shrubbery in the next few days.”
