Two knife-wielders are said to indiscriminately have stabbed multiple people at a fitness centre in Duisburg, Germany. A large scale police operation is underway according to local news outlet Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR).
The attackers are said to have fled the scene following the violent incident, with at least two police helicopters employed to try to hunt them down.
German outlet Bild is reporting at least 4 people are seriously injured. The news website reports that the incident took place inside a changing room at the gym chain “John Reed”.
The attackers are understood to have been wielding large knives or machetes according to witnesses. Germany’s Special Task Force (SEK) police are searching the building.
The victims are believed in their early 20s and early 30s. Emergency services are tending to the scene.
A police spokesman told Bild: “We ask the population to avoid the affected area in the old town.”
Essen police has cordoned off several areas of the city.
The motive for the attack remains unclear.
Duisburg police tweeted: “According to current information, one person has injured other people with an object.
“The situation is currently still confusing.”
