Girl, 16, is shot by drive-by gunmen who were targeting someone else when they opened fire on house party

• The 16 year-old girl was hit and taken to hospital but her injuries are not serious

A 16 year-old girl was shot after a gunman opened fire on a house party in Manchester yesterday, July 29.

The shot was fired from a car into a crowd of people standing outside the party at Quinney Crescent in the Moss Side area of the city. 

The girl is currently being treated in hospital but her injuries are not thought to be serious after a lucky escape.

According to witnesses at the scene, a shotgun was fired from the car, with some pellets from the blast hitting the girl before the car sped off. 

It is thought the gang in the car were targeting someone else in the crowd but hit the 16 year-old instead.

Police where called to a house in the Moss Side area of Manchester where the shooting took place 

The crime scene was still cordoned off today (July 30) as officers searched for evidence 

The 16 year-old was reportedly hit by pellets from a shotgun blast as she stood with a crowd of people outside the house 

Witnesses said the party was being held in memory of a woman who died a year earlier after being hit by a car. 

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said it was investigating the drive-by shooting and the motive behind it.

A spokesperson for the force said: ‘We’re investigating a drive-by shooting in Manchester last night that has left a teenage girl hospitalised. 

‘Shortly before 10.30pm on Friday (29 July) we were called to a report of a person injured outside an address on Quinney Crescent in the Moss Side area of the city.

‘The victim – a 16-year-old girl – was taken to hospital in a stable condition with a wound that is believed to have been caused by a firearms discharge. 

‘Thankfully, her physical injuries are understood to not be serious and our officers are with her and her family as she continues to recover in hospital.

‘Detectives from our Longsight CID are investigating the incident and believe that a single shot was fired by a passing vehicle at a crowd outside the address where a party was being held. 

‘It is not thought that the girl was the intended target but enquiries are moving at pace to establish the reason for the incident and – ultimately – the people responsible for it.’

Greater Manchester Police asked for ‘anyone with information to get in touch’ as the party ‘will provide us with a number of potential witnesses to what occurred 

 A large cordon remains at the scene today as police continue their investigation into the shooting.

GMP said no arrests have been made, and appealed for anyone with information connected to the shooting to come forward anonymously. 

Chief Superintendent Robert Cousen, commander of the GMP’s City of Manchester division, said: ‘My thoughts are with the victim whose physical injuries are thankfully not serious and she is able to talk to our officers in hospital, but that does not diminish what could’ve happened here as incidents of this nature are always reckless, serious and risk lives being lost.

‘We’re doing all we can to unpick the circumstances of this incident and to ensure that whoever is responsible is caught and brought to justice. 

‘I thank the local community for their support and cooperation while this takes place and ask anyone with information to get in touch, as we know there was a party happening last night that we are confident will provide us with a number of potential witnesses to what occurred.’
