A drunk bloke who attempted to steal a replica of one of Mexico's most holy items was the subject of divine intervention when he fell on his way out of a church and injured himself on the item.
The bizarre incident happened at the Christ the King church in Monterrey, Mexico.
Carlos Alonso, 32, stole a sword from a stature of St Michael the Archangel last week (January 14).

Having broken in to the church after jumping over a fence near the front entrance, he smashed a glass door down and the drunk bloke walked in.
And it was there that he grabbed the statute – complete with giant sword – but tripped and fell on his way out.
According to the Christian News Association, the bloke injured his neck, but it was not stated just how badly the man was injured.
The man was treated by medical officials after local spotted a “wounded man” on the floor.
Officials from Monterrey's Civil Protection Unit arrived, broke the main gate's padlock off and ended up saving the life of the bloke by giving him emergency treatment at the scene.
He was taken to a local hospital for further treatment, and will be given to police once recovered as it has been reported that his condition has left him “not” in a position to speak to police officials as it stands.

After the bizarre event, the statue of St Michael the Archangel was restored to its original place – with the sword unharmed and cleaned of any blood left on it by the would-be thief.
St Michael is known as the angel who battles with Satan.
The first mentions of him can be dated to around second century BC in Jewish texts.
He is actually mentioned as an archangel in Judaism, Christianity, Islam and Baha'i.
