The Channel Tunnel has been locked down after a suspicious vehicle was stopped. One man has been detained by police.
Explosive experts from the British Army were also called to the scene in Folkestone, Kent, this morning (Friday, September 8).
The vehicle was stopped at the terminal at around 10.30am. A police cordon has also been put in place.
Police have confirmed that the dramatic incident in Kent is not linked to the manhunt for terror suspect Daniel Khalife, who escaped from HMP Wandsworth prison earlier this week.
Former soldier Khalife is believed to have clung to the underside of a delivery lorry at the prison on Wednesday morning (September 6).
Speaking to Sky News, a driver at the Channel Tunnel said he was told by a member of staff the area was on lockdown this morning.
He was also told the delay caused by the incident will be at least two hours.
Access to the Folkestone terminal is currently suspended.
Customers seeking to travel through the tunnel should check the LeShuttle website for the latest information.
A spokesperson for Kent Police said: "At around 10.30am on Friday 8 September 2023 a suspicious vehicle was stopped at the Channel Tunnel terminal in Cheriton.
"Explosives experts from the British Army have been called to the scene and a cordon has been put in place for the safety of the public.
"This is currently having an effect on traffic approaching the terminal. A man has been detained in connection with the incident and enquiries are ongoing."
There is currently heavy traffic on the M20 as a result of the incident and because access to the terminal is limited, the Mirror reports.
