Terrifying footage has captured a 42-vehicle pile-up that left one person dead and 39 injured when a dust storm swept across a motorway in Hungary.

Five lorries and 37 cars were inadvertently caught up in the horrific M1 motorway collision, near the village of Herceghalom, on March 11.

Local media reports claim that a 44-year-old man who was found dead amid the wreckage was not discovered until the following morning. 

Among the 39 injured were 10 children, while 19 vehicles were destroyed beyond repair. Two casualties are reported to have sustained life-threatening injuries, while a further 12 are in a serious condition. 

The mass motorway collision took place 26km away from Hungary’s capital Budapest at around 2.25pm on Saturday.

Footage at the scene shows the impact of the horrific crash, with several cars completely destroyed

Around 19 vehicles were destroyed beyond repair, with windows smashed in and metalware mangled

Horrific dashcam footage shows a helpless driver, impacted by the poor visibility, drift into the middle lane before crashing into a car in front at some speed, sparking a horrible chain of events.

Shrapnel and other parts of the vehicles can be seen exploding as cars continue to crash into one another.

Further footage from the scene shows the scale of the motorway pile-up with several vehicles completely charred inside and out.

Smoke can be seen billowing out of the unrecognisable vehicles as rescue workers descended on the scene. 

Some cars had visibly mounted onto others during the shocking collision, with windows smashed in and the metalware completely mangled. 

Four helicopters and 16 ambulances arrived at the scene as they desperately attempted to recover those involved in the crash.

Firefighters and volunteers from the local town of Bicske also rushed to the scene as they tried to extinguish the fire and cool down a number of vehicles caught up in the crash.

The 39 casualties were taken to hospitals in Gyor, Tatabanya, Szekesfehervar, and Budapest. 

The Hungarian Concession Infrastructure Development Plc., who operate and maintain the motorways, attributed the mass collision to a localised dust storm. 

Traffic has since resumed on the motorway in both directions, while a criminal investigation has been opened.
