Labour has been mocked for claiming Rishi Sunak will ‘go early’ when deciding a date for the next general election.
Sir Keir Starmer and his chief strategist Morgan McSweeney have reportedly told the Labour ranks that Mr Sunak could call on voters as early as spring next year. However, this is highly unlikely with the Conservatives so far behind in the polls.
According to the Times, there could be a sense of wanting to capitalise on any economic gains over this winter with a message of “We are turning the corner, don’t let Labour ruin it”.

A senior Labour source said: “They seem to be keeping the option of May open and making it viable in a way they weren’t before. They’ve speeded up candidate selection. They’re doing a lot more direct mail.”
Rishi Sunak could be looking forward to some stateman-like scenes when he attends a G20 summit in India next week.
Analysts believe it’s likely seeing a man of Asian heritage at the head of a former colonial power will play well with people in the subcontinent, and back home in the UK.
One aide told the Times: “There are places where there are pictures of Rishi up in the streets, it’s a big deal for them.”

The Conservatives still languish 20 points behind Labour in the opinion polls but a few months is a long time in politics and if economic conditions improve, coupled with the comparably poor performance of Germany in the eurozone, the party could be seen to be making progress.
The Times reported a Cabinet Minister thought the ranking of the UK ahead of other G7 states like Germany had been “massively underplayed” adding “Germany is in recession and the eurozone can’t set interest rates to help all its members. We have been nimble and kept unemployment low.”
Ongoing strikes by junior doctors and rail workers, as well as migrant crossings, and the long-running scandal of crumbling schools may still dog the Tories however ahead of their conference in October.
Rishi Sunak is tipped to hold an election in autumn 2024, despite the Labour leader’s prediction.
