New Chancellor Jeremy Hunt faced questions about how long he believed Prime Minister Liz Truss would last.  The new Chancellor of the Exchequer told Martha Kearney that Ms Truss will be judged at the next general election in 2025.  He also claimed that what the British public wanted was stability in the Government. There has been much turmoil in number 10 this week as former Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng was swapped out for Mr Hunt, following his announcement of the mini-budget.

Ms Kearney said: “Let’s return now to the political crisis, which we have seen unfolding in recent days.

“How long will Liz Truss be Prime Minister?”

Mr Hunt told Radio 4’s Today Programme: “Well I think what the country wants now is stability.

“She has been Prime Minister for less than five weeks, and I would just say this that I think she will be judged at an election.

“Lots of my colleagues are worrying about a general election.”

Ms Kearney added: “Well Labour is calling for an election now, and they say the only way they’re going to get stability is by having a new Government.”

Mr Hunt said: “Well when we are judged at a general election we will be judged by what we deliver over the next eighteen months.

“By far more than what has happened over the last.”

BBC’s Nick Robinson reacted to the interview on Twitter. He said: “He came to praise the Prime Minister but buried her economic strategy.”

Sir Keir Starmer wrote on Twitter: “Changing the Chancellor doesn’t undo the damage made in Downing Street. Liz Truss’ reckless approach has crashed the economy, causing mortgages to skyrocket, and has undermined Britain’s standing on the world stage.

“We need a change in government. With my leadership, Labour will secure Britain’s economy and get us out of this mess.”

Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves also wrote on Twitter: “This humiliating u-turn is necessary – but the real damage has already been done.

“This is a Tory crisis, made in Downing Street. It won’t be forgiven or forgotten. Only a Labour government has the credibility and authority to fix this mess.”
