GB News host Dan Wootton asked Daily Telegraph associate editor Christopher Hope and Daily Mail columnist Andrew Pierce if Brexit was now under threat as Rishi Sunak had now won the keys to Number 10. Mr Hope began by warning that he was “a bit worried” about Northern Ireland and that it was essential that Mr Sunak did not “backslide” over Ulster’s post-Brexit arrangement that keeps the province in the single market.

He said: “Well I think the hope is obviously Rishi Sunak is a Brexiteer and is not coming for Brexit because you’ve got to make the best of it.

“The idea of reopening it, he was with the European Research Group of Tory MPs (ERG) along with Penny Mordant before 10 this morning.

“And he told them that he will honour and get the best deal for Northern Ireland Protocol.

“I’m concerned about Northern Ireland a bit as the Treasury looked for an opt-out on VAT rules when they were in charge of getting a new deal on the Northern Ireland Protocol.

“So there’s a bit of previous with Rishi’s Treasury.

“But the hope is that he recognises that he’s got to run the party for the left and right, young and old wings of the party and get it right.

“And that means not to backslide on key things like Brexit.”

Mr Wootton then asked Mr Pierce for his view about the new Prime Minister and Brexit.

Mr Pierce was sceptical about the former Chancellor’s pro-Brexit credentials arguing that he was “supposedly” a Brexiteer and that there was not much evidence of the Richmond MP “flexing his muscles” on the UK’s departure from the European Union.

He added that resolving the Northern Ireland Protocol to ensure the province was no longer part of the single market needed to be a priority.

He said: “Rishi Sunak is supposedly a Brexiteer.

“If you go back and delve back deep Dan and try to find what he said about Brexit there’s not much honestly.

“Now to be fair to him in 2016 he was a minor backbench MP that nobody had heard of, he’d only been an MP for a year.

“But you never see much evidence of him flexing his muscles on Brexit but he would simply not be forgiven if he slid back even slightly.

“The country took a vote to support Brexit.

“We’re nearly there Boris delivered most of it.

“Northern Ireland is not done.

“It’s outrageous that it’s still in the single market, effectively still in the European Union.

“They’ve got to get that sorted but they mustn’t sell out.”
