Penny Mordaunt has refused to accept a coronation for former Chancellor Rishi Sunak in the Conservative leadership race and announced she will not stand down. The Leader of the House who was the third leadership contender earlier also spurned advances from Boris Johnson to support him against the former Chancellor. The former Prime Minister has now stepped down from the leadership race, leaving Mr Sunak and Ms Mordaunt in the running.

With Mr Johnson quitting, Ms Mordaunt is hoping that many of his supporters will refuse to accept a Sunak coronation and back her.

The spokesman added: “Shadow cabinet ministers, Ed Balls and advisers to Keir Starmer all say she is the candidate Labour fears the most.”

“I shall now nominate #PM4PM [Penny Mordaunt] to let the members of our great Party decide who should be our Leader and next Prime Minister. I abhor political coronations. They  invariably get it wrong.”

She is holding firm in the hope that around 50 angry Johnson backers get her over the 100 line.

The probable victory for Mr Sunak came despite Mr Johnson claiming he had the 100 MPs needed to go to the members for an election and puts an end to the most unlikely comeback story in British political history.

However, there were fears that if he won with members while a majority of MPs backed Mr Sunak then it could destroy the party.

Earlier, former Home Secretary Sella Braverman, a favourite among the right of the party, surprised many by coming out in favour of Mr Sunak and calling for “unity and stability”.
