Guy Verhofstadt is continuing his campaign to get the UK to rejoin Europe – but Brexiteers have shown him that many are not keen on overturning the result of the 2016 referendum. The veteran Europhile MEP has claimed polls show Britons regret voting to leave the EU in 2016, but provided no evidence for his claim.
Mr Verhofstadt said on social media: “Polls show British voters regret Brexit and want a European future.
“Yet no opposition party dare represent them and the next Tory Government will be the most eurosceptic yet.
“Britain needs a pro-European renaissance.”
In his post, the Remain backing MEP throws his weight behind a pro-EU demonstration in London next month.
With the slogan “we want our star back”, the National Rejoin March will take place on Saturday, September 10.
But Brexiteers were quick to come to the defence of Britain’s historic referendum decision to leave the EU.
Twitter user @stevew_leave_eu said: “They hate us but they really miss our cash.”
Meanwhile, @waynemarriott8 said he “can’t understand the EU” because they failed to offer a better alternative to British voters.
He explained: “Can’t understand the EU, they hate us, they had the opportunity under Cameron to offer us a better deal but refused to, so Brexit was a direct consequence.”
Another user, @sunbuffy replied: “Leading G7 economic growth since we left the EU. Ending the exploitation of cheap migrant labour.
“Restoring sovereignty. None of project fear came true.
“Remoaners even can’t think of a tangible benefit of being in EU.

“#Brexit has been brilliant to be fair.”
@penny150000 responded: “You just want our money with nothing in return. You are reading the wrong polls.
“You’ve shown your true colours & Britain is better out of the corrupt EU.”
@wouldbescouse added: “Bye. If we’ve made such an awful mistake, why fixate on having us back?
“Why not just get on with your land of milk and honey without us?”
Mr Verhofstadt has been a leading critic of Brexit and has regularly attacked the democratic vote of 2016.
He is formerly the leader of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe from 2009 to 2019, and has recently served as chairman of the Brexit Steering Group of Members of the European Parliament.
He has also recently bizarrely argued that younger politicians will take the UK back into the EU – despite neither of the two main parties having this as a policy.
He said: “There will be, in my opinion, a generation of young politicians in the UK who will say oh look – let’s work together, let’s enter in the European Union and let’s change the European Union for the better.
“We never know what will happen in the future.”
