Joe Biden’s interventions in key swing states in the midterm elections are providing a major boost for his Republican opponents, a Washington DC insider has warned. Patrick Basham, director of the Democracy Institute, made his comments as polling suggests the Republicans are set to make big gains despite visits by Biden to states like Pennsylvania this week.

Interactive polling results in the US show the Republicans are set to win Georgia, Arizona and Nevada off the Democrats and hold on to Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Wisconsin and Ohio.

This would give the Republicans 53 seats in the Senate to the Democrats’ 47, the same prediction in the monthly tracker poll for Express.co.uk by the Democracy Institute polling.

The polling of 1,500 voters by the Democracy Institute gave the Republicans a 47 percent to 44 percent lead over the Democrats in the Senate race while in the race for the House of Representatives it was 48 percent to 44 percent.

Mr Basham said: “Joe Biden campaigning in-person for Democratic candidates is the gift that keeps on giving – for their Republican opponents.

“For several months, Democrats in swing states and competitive congressional districts have avoided their own president like the plague. And, for a very good reason. Biden’s not only unpopular nationally with voters, but he’s especially unpopular in battlegrounds like Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio, Arizona and Georgia.

“When it comes to the President’s endorsement, it’s a case of, ‘Thanks, Mr President, but actually, No thanks!’. Dozens of embattled Democratic politicians continue to bat away White House invitations to appear alongside Biden. The less fortunate candidates are barely tolerating their face-to-face experiences with a general leading his partisan troops to a heavy midterms defeat.”

Polling shows some of Biden’s key campaign issues, such as abortion rights for women, are weak for him in key swing states in the so-called Rust Belt.

Republicans have a plus two percent advantage with their opposition to abortion, according to the Democracy Institute.

Adding to that, the Democrats are associated with wealthy elites by 47 percent and ordinary people by just 43 percent.

Mr Biden himself has a disapproval rating of 55 percent. Respondents to the poll indicate Trump was a better President as inflation and the cost of living crisis bite Americans.

Mr Basham said: “Swing states and toss-up districts are especially inhospitable to Biden because, in contrast to so many Democratic party bastions, here voters are more working class, more religious, more pro-gun, more anti-abortion, more anti-war, and more anti-woke. Further damaging Biden’s brand are the still-undecided voters who are overwhelmingly blue collar and heavily disapprove of the president’s performance.

“Biden’s physical and geographic proximity to Democratic candidates guarantees these voters will decide in favour of the Republicans.”

The comments came after Biden was in Pennsylvania on Thursday to aid Democrat John Fetterman’s campaign for the Senate.

The President said that the “rest of the world is looking” to see who holds control of Congress after the upcoming midterm elections, warning that Republican victories would jeopardize the nation’s standing.

Speaking at a fundraiser in Philadelphia, Biden sounded the alarm about what he viewed as the urgency of the moment, saying Republicans are trying to roll back access to abortion and raise the price of prescription drugs. He seized on comments by some GOP lawmakers, including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, casting doubt on the US commitment to help Ukraine fend off Russia’s invasion of its territory.

“They said that if they win they’re not likely to fund, to continue to fund Ukraine,” Biden said. “These guys don’t get it. It’s a lot bigger than Ukraine. It’s Eastern Europe. It’s NATO. It’s really serious, serious, consequential outcomes.”

He added: “The rest of the world is looking at this election as well. Both the good guys and the bad guys out there — to see what’s going to happen. We’ve got to win. John’s got to win.”

Polling by the Democracy Institute shows 61 percent of Americans disapprove of Biden’s claim that Trump’s MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement as being “like semi-fascism” in nature.
