Margot Robbie, the Australian actress known for her upcoming role in the Barbie movie, recently ignited a lively discussion within the cryptocurrency community.
The 2023 Barbie movie is an American live-action comedy film brought to life by director Greta Gerwig, who also co-wrote the script with Noah Baumbach. The film, inspired by Mattel’s Barbie fashion dolls, marks the first live-action adaptation following a series of computer-animated films released directly to video and streaming platforms. The movie features Margot Robbie in the role of Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, with a supporting cast that includes America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell.
The plot revolves around Barbie, who is expelled from Barbieland for failing to meet its perfection standards. This leads her on a journey in the real world, where she discovers the beauty of embracing uniqueness.
The film made its debut in cinemas on July 21, 2023. It has been met with largely positive feedback from critics, who have lauded Gerwig’s directorial prowess, the cast’s performances, and the film’s challenge to conventional gender norms. The movie has also proven to be a commercial success, raking in over $774 million globally to date.
During a recent interview, she likened discussions about Bitcoin (BTC) to the characteristics of Ken, Barbie’s partner in the movie. This comparison has since drawn a variety of reactions from the crypto community.
In her conversation with Fandango, Robbie shared that overhearing her husband, Tom Ackerley, and television producer, David Heyman, discussing Bitcoin reminded her of Ken’s traits. Ken, the fictional character in Barbie, is brought to life by Ryan Gosling in the film. This comparison triggered a flurry of responses on Twitter from the crypto community.
Among those who chimed in was Michael Saylor, CEO of MicroStrategy, who humorously tweeted that Bitcoin indeed embodies “Big Ken Energy.”
Other notable figures in the crypto industry also shared their thoughts on Robbie’s comments.
Lea Thompson, a well-known crypto influencer who goes by the Twitter handle Girl Gone Crypto, expressed her bullish sentiment on Bitcoin after hearing Robbie’s comments.
However, social media influencer Layah Heilpern interpreted Robbie’s remarks as a slight against men who discuss Bitcoin, suggesting that Robbie’s comparison implied that such men are “weak and pathetic.”
According to an article by Cointelegraph published yesterday, offering a different perspective, Mark Travers, the lead psychologist at Awake Therapy, suggested in a Forbes report that embodying Ken’s energy could indicate a selfless and adaptable individual. He argued that Ken’s character challenges traditional gender stereotypes by willingly playing a supportive role in a universe that revolves around Barbie.
Robbie herself admitted during the Fandango interview that defining what constitutes Ken energy can be subjective, stating, “It is not something you can define; it is just something you can sense.”
Steven Lubka, a managing director at Swan Bitcoin, viewed Robbie’s comment as a positive sign for the crypto community.
