Wetherspoons to show World Cup in majority of 850 pubs for first time ever

Football fans will be delighted to hear that Wetherspoons around the country have confirmed they will be showing the Qatar World Cup in their pubs.

While showing the football in pubs has been a long and popular tradition across the country, this is the first time Wetherspoons will ever be doing it in such a large number.

However, with the World Cup kicking off today, fans can enjoy the game in their local pubs.

The iconic chain has said the game will be shown in the majority of their 850 pubs across the country, although some chains don’t have screens so won’t be participating.

While fans will be excitedly gathering up and down the country, there is one catch to these viewings that has been announced by the pubs.

Due to Wetherspoons policy, all World Cup matches will be muted and shown with subtitles instead. Attendees of the pub will not be able to hear any commentary.

This is normal policy and stands for all sports matches and other events shown in the pubs.

The individual pubs in the chain are sound free environments, especially in the day.

Speaking on why this is, Eddie Gershon said this decision was for people who are at the pub but have no interest in football and don't want to listen to the commentary.

However, it has been confirmed that the manager of the individual pubs could decide on the day whether they want to crank the volume up.

Fans are particularly anticipating the England V Wales game on 29th November and it could be expected for that.

Speaking to LADbible, Gershon said: "Wetherspoon will be showing the World Cup matches in its pubs.

"There will only be a handful of pubs not showing the games as they do not have screens.

"As always the sound will be switched off for the games as there will be a lot of people who are not interested in watching the game or hearing the commentary.

"It will be up to the manager’s discretion if they wish to put the sound on.”

The pub-giant is expecting a big turnout over the coming weeks, with England’s first match against Iran airing on tomorrow lunchtime (Monday, November 21).
