A young boy tragically died in a freak accident after a granite table fell and struck his head during a wedding reception, police have confirmed.
Luca Berlingerio, who was just five years old, was rushed to hospital following the incident, which happened at The Drake Hotel in Oakbrook, Chicago, at around 10pm on Friday September 4.
While emergency services rushed to the scene, an ER doctor who had been in attendance at the wedding gave the boy CPR.
But when an ambulance arrived the child was said to be unresponsive before he was taken to Elmhurst Memorial Hospital.
Luca was tragically pronounced dead from a traumatic head injury shortly after.
After reviewing video footage, Oakbrook police have said the child was lying on the table top before gripping at the edge as he started to slip off, causing it to flip over and land on his head, reports WGN.
He was found by his parents Simone and Anna Berlingerio soon after, and they dialled 911.
The Drake Hotel told the Daily Mail: "Our team is heartbroken about this terrible accident.
"We wish to share our condolences with the family and friends affected. To respect their privacy, we aren’t able to share the specifics of the incident."
A crowdfunding page to help raise money for Luca's grieving family has been set up by friend Yesenia Cortez.
She wrote: "No words can explain what it feels to lose a child. My condolences to the Berlingerio family.
"We are asking all our fellow UPS brothers and friends to assist Simone and his family during this tragedy.
"We know times are hard but anything will help."
Luca was formally identified by the DuPage County Coroner's Office on Thursday.
A funeral will be held on Saturday, September 12, although attendance will be limited to 50 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
