Teenage girl ‘raped and paraded through village’ tied to alleged attacker

A teenage girl was allegedly raped and paraded through an Indian village.

In shocking footage a 16-year-old girl could be seen tied to her alleged rapist from her waist as crowds chanted slogans and beat her in the Alirajpur district of Madhya Pradesh state.

Dozens of men could be heard yelling "Bharat Mata Ki Jai", which means "Long Live Mother India" in Hindi as she was dragged along a dirt road.

Local media say the young girl's family were among those forced to walk with her alleged attacker – who is married with two kids – to shame her.

Shocking footage shows the girl sitting on the ground, with her hands in her head, while her supposed attacker sits next to her.

The pair, who were both tied by the same rope, were surrounded by a crowd at one stage, with one man seen stomping on the alleged attacker’s head.

Local police have since arrested six people, including the alleged rapist after the video went viral and caused outrage online.

They also freed the girl when they finally arrived at the scene.

Police officer Dilip Singh Bilwal said: "One of the cases was registered against the 21-year-old man who is accused of rape.

"Another first incidence report was registered against family members of the girl and villagers for parading her in the village and beating her."

India is often criticised for its record on sexual violence.

A notorious case in 2012 saw student Jyoti Singh gang-raped and murdered on a bus in New Delhi.

It led to national and international condemnation and four men responsible for the brutal attacked were hanged in March 2020.
