‘Poorliest girl in England’, 4, off ventilator in Strep A fight but still in ICU

A four-year-old girl described by hospital staff as "the poorliest girl in the whole of England” after she contracted the deadly Strep A infection is now no longer on a ventilator.

Camila Rose Burns, from Bolton, Greater Manchester, remains in intensive care at Alder Hey Children Hospital, and is still receiving dialysis and extra oxygen, but is at least no longer in need of life support.

However, Camila is not yet completely clear of the killer bug and is also still suffering the effects of sepsis.

Nine children under the age of 12 have died in the UK since an outbreak of the unusually invasive form of the bacterium, known as iGAS, began in September.

Camila’s parent Kaye and Dean say their daughter remains "extremely poorly" but they are hoping for the best.

They told Bolton News: “As you can imagine being off the ventilator is a massive improvement, but she is still extremely poorly.

“We have still not made it to the ‘safety’ of being out of intensive care.

“We are praying for her to continue to get better and for her body to recover so she can get back to playing at home with her family."

Dean previously said hospital staff had described her as "the poorliest girl in the whole of England" and said he had been "living in an absolute nightmare".

He said his daughter had gone from dancing with her friends two Fridays ago to feeling "a little under the weather" that Sunday before going to hospital.

After she was finally admitted, Dean described how she needed life-saving intervention.

"We shouted some nurses down and we had to leave the room," he told Sky News.

"They put her to sleep and she’s been on a ventilator ever since, keeping her alive. It's the worst thing that can ever happen to anybody."

A GoFundMe page has now been set up by Camilla’s auntie in support of Dean and his partner Kaye, who have been left with “no income into the home,” as they vow to not leave Camilla’s side.

It has already reached more Ethan 10 times its original £2,000 target.

Dean urged parents with “any doubts” about infection to take their child to hospital, as he spoke to the BBC yesterday.

He said: "Any doubts if they don't look right, just scoop them up and take them and get them checked out.

"We are praying that she will make a full recovery. We are devastated and she is such a beautiful little girl."
