A man who spent two years and two months growing out his hair has donated his 13-inch locks in his daughter's name.
The man, from New York, shared his moving family story on Reddit under the username KungPowChicken23, saying he donated the hair to Locks of Love and wanted to tell his story to raise awareness.
Locks of Love is a charity that provides custom-made hair prosthetics to disadvantaged children up to the age of 21 who have suffered hair loss as a result of medical conditions, such as alopecia, burn trauma, and cancer treatment.
The post received over 68,000 upvotes and more than 1,407 comments on the website.
Describing the experience as the first time he'd grown his hair, the man said the "maintenance isn't easy".
Replying to one comment, he revealed a little more detail, writing: "I never had long hair before. I grew it with intentions to donate it.
"That said, toward the end I did have some attachment issues.
"I'd wake up some days saying let's do it, and others saying not yet. But after I sent that package out with the hair, I felt like I made someone's life a little better, and that feeling made the two years easily worth it."
Other Reddit users were really supportive of the donation.

One replied: "Hell yeah dude, I donated 14 inches a few years ago after not cutting it for 2 years; went another full year between cuts again. (although didn’t donate) May 2021 will be two years between cuts again, but this time I’m for sure donating."
And another wrote: "My husband just donated to wigs for kids and we got a letter back from the girl who received it.
"In this day and age there's nothing more amazing than making a positive difference in someone's life. Good on you! I hope you are able to make many more positive differences in your daughter's name."
The post elicited an outpouring of concern for the man's daughter, although one Reddit user wrote: "I went spelunking in this guy's post history to see if I could answer this question.
"While I can't give you a definitive answer exactly, he says he's been growing this out for two years and two months for this purpose, his daughter was only born six months ago and was in good shape a month ago.
"I'm going to say this guy's just excited about his new daughter and put her name on the donation."
