London is now on the UK government's national coronavirus "watch list" after a surge in cases of the deadly illness across the capital, local councils have said.

London Councils has said the Capital's placement on the list "is a stark reminder that now is time for all Londoners to pull together and take action to keep themselves, their families and their communities safe".

The news means coronavirus testing in the capital is set to ramp up, with health authorities in the city to receive extra help in the form of additional testing capacity.

Responding to the news, London Councils chairman Peter John said: "It is welcome that the city's testing capacity is boosted so that Londoners can have timely access to Covid-19 tests."
