Killer ‘doesn’t know what happened’ as he admits brutal murder of nurse and kids

The evil killer who strangled an NHS nurse and her two children to death said “I don’t know what happened” in court today (April 5).

Saju Chelavalel admitted to the brutal murder of his wife Anju Ashok, her son Jeeva Saju, six, and her daughter Janvi Saju, four.

All three of his victims were found at a property in Petherton Court, Northamptonshire on December 15, 2022.

Anju was sadly pronounced dead at the scene, while her two children were rushed to Kettering General Hospital where they later died.

Chelavalel was arrested on the day of the murder and was charged on December 17.

The case against Saju Chelavalel was not opened after he pleaded guilty to three counts of murder during a 12-minute hearing at Northampton Crown Court.

Assisted by an interpreter in the dock, Chelavalel answered “guilty” to two of the counts he faced, but in relation to the charge of murdering Jeeva he replied: “I don’t know what happened to the children, but I plead guilty.”

A coroner’s inquest opened in January heard the cause of death for the children had been listed as strangulation, while Ms Ashok died of asphyxia, as reports The Mirror.

Adjourning the case until July 3, Judge David Herbert KC said: “There can only be one sentence in law, namely a life sentence, but the judge dealing with your case on that day will have to set the appropriate minimum term.”

His wife Anju was originally from Vaikom in the state of Kerala, India, and moved to the UK to take a job at Kettering General Hospital in 2021.

After her death hospital bosses paid tribute to the “committed and compassionate” nurse, who was loved and respected by her friends and colleagues.

Jeeva and Janvi were pupils at Kettering Park Infant Academy in Park Avenue and the school’s headteacher described them as “delightful and caring children who had many friends”.
